    Spinalonga (Greek: Σπιvαλόγκα) is an island located in the gulf of Elounda in north east Crete, in Lasithi. The island is famous for being used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957 where it was the setting for the 2005 novel The Island by Victoria Hislop.
